The Thomas Law Group specializes in commercial real estate law. We represent owners, lenders, borrowers and tenants in all aspects of commercial real estate transactions including purchases and sales, financings, leases, joint ventures and declarations of easements. We also act as Georgia local counsel for out-of-state lenders, law firms and investors.

Background

Don Thomas is an Atlanta native and the founding partner of the Thomas Law Group. Don received a B.S. degree in Business Administration, Accounting from Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama in 1997 where he was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. He obtained a J.D. from the Georgia State College of Law in 2000 where he was on Law Review. Don also attended Georgia State’s J. Mack Robinson College of Business where he received an M.B.A. degree in 2000. In 1999, Don joined Fleming & Ray, LLC in Atlanta as an associate. In 2001, Don and Sam Hatcher of Ray, Sherman & Hatcher, LLC formed Hatcher Thomas LLC as partners. In 2008, Sam joined Synovus Financial Corporation as executive vice president, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary. Don formed the Thomas Law Group in June of 2008.

Professional Accomplishments

Don was selected as one of “Georgia’s Rising Star Super Lawyers” (the top 2.5% in the state) for 2005 and 2006. He was one of two contributing authors of Georgia Landlord & Tenant – Lease Forms & Clauses (2nd Ed.) and he spoke on “Withholding Tax and Real Estate Transactions” at the 25th Annual Real Property Law Institute at Amelia Island Plantation, Georgia in May 2003. He is a member of the State Bar of Georgia, Real Property Law Section and the American Bar Association.

Representative Engagements

Don represents developers and owners in all phases of commercial real estate including acquisitions, developments, financings, dispositions and tax-free exchanges. Don also represents both landlords and tenants in commercial leasing. He has closed transactions involving a wide variety of projects including:

• Acquisitions, dispositions and financings of multifamily real estate projects and portfolios across the southeast.

• Acquisitions, dispositions and financings of medical office buildings, campus reciprocal easement agreements, ground leases and medical office leasing for one of the top specialty-referral hospitals in Atlanta.

• Acquisitions, lease assumptions and financings of single-tenant buildings and sites leased to nationally recognized tenants.

• Negotiation of easements, declarations, covenants, and operating agreements for shopping centers, single-family residential developments and mixed-use developments.

• Acquisitions of raw land for development by a national restaurant chain and preparation/negotiation of declarations of easements and restrictions supporting said development.
